Clothing materials can become integral components of the body's living mechanism, functioning both as ornamentation and as a physical continuation of the body. Material once worn merges with bodily identity and participates in the formation of selfhood. Clothing operates not only as a tool to realize a projected self but as an essential element of that personal project. The self realized in the world occurs through clothing to such an extent that individual identity becomes indistinguishable from the apparel.
