"Titled Reclamation, the collective featured the work of six Indigenous brands and designers with an all-Indigenous cast of models, and closed with performances from rapper Barkaa and poet Luke Currie-Richardson."
On Sunday night in Sydney, First Nations Fashion and Design staged its first runway show in four years ahead of Australian fashion week. The show, titled Reclamation, featured six Indigenous brands and designers with an all-Indigenous cast of models. The program closed with performances from rapper Barkaa and poet Luke Currie-Richardson. The event included hand-painted silk garments presented by Western Australian and Northern Territory collective Tjarlirli and Kaltukatjara Art. The plan is to make the runway platform annual for Indigenous designers outside the industry’s formal structures. The goal is to challenge the existing fashion system and ensure First Nations voices are embedded permanently in the future of Australian fashion.
