In her book Fresh Sets, Tembe Denton-Hurst reflects on the evolution of nail art, starting from its 19th-century Parisian roots to its current global movement, particularly in the Vietnamese community in America after Saigon's fall. Denton-Hurst highlights her personal journey with manicures and showcases 35 innovative nail artists, capturing contemporary trends like maximalist designs and cyber aesthetics. The book illustrates how nail art has transitioned from exclusive runway pieces to accessible, daily expressions, emphasizing the creativity and cultural connections it fosters in today's society.
I view being a nail artist as a very intricate and pristine job, and I definitely try to capture beauty in my work. But, over time, I've really learned how to experiment more and to lean into the awkwardness of beauty.
The democratization of nail art has allowed the creative form to flourish across time and space. Extravagant designs once only seen sauntering down the catwalk, for instance, are now within reach for daily wear.
