Flamboyance, creativity, club culture and no smart phones: why the 1980s are all the rage again
Briefly

Peter York suggests that the societal issues of today will frequently be blamed on the 1980s, similarly to the past blame on the sixties. However, the decade also birthed a vibrant style culture still influential today. This is showcased in exhibitions at major London galleries, such as the National Portrait Gallery, featuring influential magazines and photographers like Juergen Teller. Additionally, Tate Modern's exhibition highlights the impact of club culture figure Leigh Bowery, while the smaller Outlaws exhibit delves into the DIY creativity that characterized the decade's fashion scene.
In the future everyone will blame the eighties for all societal ills, in the same way that people have previously blamed the sixties, Peter York, the quintessential observer of 1980s' style and cultural trends, said recently.
The show features the work of more than 80 photographers, some of whom, like Juergen Teller and David Sims, have since become globally famous.
Across the river at Tate Modern, another related exhibition, Leigh Bowery!, celebrates the life and times of the most outrageous figure to emerge out of the intertwined world of eighties' fashion and club culture.
This is particularly bad timing as it is a deep dive into the ground-level explosion of DIY creativity that underpins both of the big exhibitions.
