Valentino Garavani died in Rome at age 93. His funeral will take place next Friday at the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli. He was renowned worldwide simply as Valentino and closely associated with the color red. He retired from his fashion house in 2007. A childhood visit to the opera in Barcelona inspired his lifelong preference for red. He was born Ludovico Clemente Garavani in Voghera in 1932. He trained in Paris and returned to Italy, presenting his first show in Florence in 1962. He founded the Valentino fashion house in Rome in 1959 and achieved dazzling international success.
