Two diamond-encrusted Cartier brooches once owned by Virginia Coulthard are now on display at Eltham Palace, showcasing the 1930s art-deco transformation by the Courtaulds. The falcon and white Tudor rose designs mirror the palace’s stained glass windows and were a personal gift from Stephen to Virginia in 1937. Known for their high-quality craftsmanship, these brooches symbolize the blend of historical and modern aesthetics that defined the couple’s restoration of the Tudor residence. The pieces were acquired at auction, aided by a grant from the Art Fund and support from the Wolfson Foundation.
Virginia Courtauld's beautiful, Cartier diamond and gem-set brooches epitomise the glamorous, modern spirit that Stephen and Virginia brought to Eltham Palace.
The brooches perfectly bring together the old in the form of Edward IV's cyphers, and the new with a 1930s palette of pink tourmaline and blue sapphire.
The jewellery is significant as pieces of high-quality Cartier workmanship, but as a deeply personal gift from husband to wife.
It is wonderful the jewellery had found its way home after they were bought at auction.
