In Malaga, horse-drawn carriages are set to be phased out by 2025 to prioritize animal welfare and improve the city's image. Despite the traditions associated with this mode of transport, many horses suffer under harsh conditions. Mayor Francisco de la Torre emphasizes the need for more efficient and respectful alternatives, like e-bikes. While carriage owners face job insecurity, compensations are being considered. Malaga's move may prompt other Spanish cities to reconsider similar practices, while traditional events such as bullfighting remain controversial. This reflects the broader challenge of balancing cultural heritage with animal rights awareness.
"We are taking this step thinking about the welfare of the animals and the image that Malaga offers to the world," said Malaga mayor Francisco de la Torre.
"In 2025 there will be much more efficient and respectful ways of getting around," adding that an e-bike scheme will probably be the best replacement.
Malaga's decision certainly appears to be a step in the right direction and one that could spur others to follow suit.
Still, there is talk of them being generously compensated, as much as 120,000 each.
