Barcelona to crack down on tacky shops that 'degrade' city's image
Briefly

Albert Batlle, the councillor for Ciutat Vella, stated that shops contributing 'nothing' economically, such as those selling mobile phone cases, should be 'eliminated from the district'. He explained that many of these shops, which sell primarily low-cost items, do not contribute positively to the local economy or the cultural experience meant for both residents and visitors. He emphasized a need to reclaim the authenticity of the old town and indicated plans for a more meaningful retail presence.
Councillor Jordi Coronas also pointed out that shops selling items with 'sexist, homophobic or simply bad taste messages' degrade Barcelona's reputation as a leading tourist city. He expressed that such establishments contribute neither economically nor culturally to the community. Their existence creates a mismatch between Barcelona's international standing and the low-value activities taking place in the old town, which he believes should be addressed through restrictions.
