Barcelona presidential candidate Marc Ciria reveals his plan to bring Lionel Messi back to Barcelona
"This is about proposing a real project in which Leo Messi is a strategic partner for the club... for Messi to be a strategic partner in all areas in which we urgently need to increase revenue,"
"Just one fact: we are generating 994 million in revenue. In the 17-18 year, with for me the worst board of directors in the history of the club, we generated 990. If I apply only inflation, the cost of living, Barça today should be at 1,200 million in income. Either we realise that Leo Messi is strategic, not for today, but for the future of the club and to protect and preserve the ownership model or we are not understanding the world of sport."
"I would love for Leo Messi to say goodbye as a Barça player, but if it can't be, let it be as an institutional and commercial figure who is going to give us those resources we need."
Marc Ciria has joined the Barcelona presidential race alongside Joan Laporta, Victor Font and Xavi Vilajoana. Ciria proposes making Lionel Messi a strategic partner to increase revenue across multiple areas and to protect the club's ownership model. Ciria cites current revenue of €994 million versus €990 million in 2017–18 and argues that inflation would put expected income near €1,200 million. Any decision on a playing return would be made by the technical direction together with Messi. If a playing farewell is not possible, Messi could serve as an institutional and commercial figure. Messi remains contracted to Inter Miami through the end of the 2028 MLS season.
