Nextcloud, a European cloud vendor, has accused Google of compromising its Android Files application by revoking its "All files access" permission, which has been part of the app since 2016. While Google promotes privacy-friendly tools, Nextcloud states these alternatives cannot substitute the required functionality. This change, imposed in 2024, has rendered the app ineffective for its large user base. Despite multiple appeals for reinstatement, Google remains unresponsive, pushing Nextcloud to redirect users to a fully functional version on F-Droid, leaving their access via Play Store heavily restricted.
Nextcloud has long offered the "All files access" permission for its Android Files app but had it revoked by Google in 2024 without previous security concerns.
The issue arises due to Google's restrictions on accessing files, compelling Nextcloud to seek alternative, less functional solutions which severely restrict user experience.
