EC says Google, Apple in violation of DMA gatekeeper rules
Briefly

The European Union has accused Google's parent company, Alphabet, of non-compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) following a year-long investigation alongside Apple and Meta. The preliminary findings highlight Alphabet's preferential treatment of its services in search results and its restrictions on app developers directing users to cheaper alternatives outside the Play Store. Although Google has indicated plans to modify its practices in early 2024, the European Commission believes these adjustments fall short of the required compliance, raising concerns about competition and market fairness.
Alphabet treats its own services, such as shopping, hotel booking, transport, or financial and sports results, more favorably in Google Search results than similar services offered by third parties.
The commission said in its statement on the matter that those tweaks didn't go far enough to meet the bloc's requirements.
