AWS reckons VMware is now crusty like a mainframe
Briefly

In 2025, AWS has shifted its alliance with VMware, now viewing it as a legacy provider that needs re-platforming. The breakdown in their relationship can be traced to changes in VMware's licensing under Broadcom, which limited the resale capabilities of their joint offering, VMware Cloud on AWS. As a result, AWS introduced an AI-driven tool, AWS Transform, to facilitate quicker migrations of VMware workloads, significantly speeding up the process compared to traditional methods. The cloud giant aims to help organizations transition away from VMware amidst evolving licensing challenges.
AWS generated migration wave plans for 500 VMs in just 15 minutes and performed networking translations up to 80x faster than traditional methods.
With rapid changes in VMware licensing and support model, organizations are increasingly exploring alternatives despite the difficulties associated with migrating and modernizing VMware workloads.
