Umaro Cissoko Embalo announced he would not seek a second term in November elections, expressing that Guinea-Bissau deserves better politicians than his rivals, including Domingos Simoes Pereira.
Domingos Simoes Pereira has long contested Embalo's victory, citing fraud. He regards himself as politically persecuted and accuses Embalo of manipulating the judiciary against him.
Despite the PAIGC winning a majority in the last elections, Embalo dissolved the parliament and has governed by decree since December 2023, refusing to appoint Simoes Pereira.
Simoes Pereira returned to Guinea-Bissau after assurances on his parliamentary immunity, yet declined to comment on Embalo's choice not to seek reelection, labeling it a personal matter.
