British food sales to Europe have plummeted by a fifth since 2018, sparking calls for Labour to slash post-Brexit red tape and strike a food standards agreement with the EU. Farmers have faced a significant decline in food exports to the EU, which accounted for 57% of all UK food exports worth £14bn in 2023. The new Brexit-related requirements, including physical and documentary checks, have complicated the situation and contributed to the drastic drop in trade.
The current deal with the EU permits tariff-free access, yet the departure from the single market and customs union has severely impacted exports. Daniel Zeichner highlighted that agri-food trade with the EU has declined 20% in terms of exports and 11% for imports since 2018, emphasizing the need for a reassessment of post-Brexit trading conditions to better support British farmers and restore the flow of goods.
