Four survivors held a press conference urging the government to reform judicial practices in gender-based violence cases by banning the use of counselling notes and character references. Among them was Natasha O'Brien, who was assaulted by an Irish soldier, and Paula Doyle, who shared her traumatic experiences of the justice system following her rape. The survivors expressed that the current judicial process is traumatizing and disproportionately burdens victims, calling for change to create a more supportive system. Protests are planned for International Women's Day in major cities.
Our present judicial system is broken, unfair and at present damaging for victims. You are not living. You are barely surviving. This is not a victim-centred justice system.
These are supposed to be confidential, extremely distressing personal notes to be read and scrutinised by both prosecuting and defensive teams for any shred of information that could be used against me.
