UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will attend important discussions with EU leaders as tensions rise over U.S. tariffs imposed by President Trump. Concerns about prolonged trade wars stemming from these tariffs could lead to unemployment and inflation, impacting living standards significantly. Irish officials emphasize the need for a cooperative transatlantic relationship and highlight the challenges EU tariffs may pose to Ireland. Foreign Minister Simon Harris is set to participate in G20 talks on these economic challenges as Ireland joins the discussions for the first time, solidifying its role within the EU.
At a time of heightened tensions around the world, we need a strong transatlantic relationship. I am pleased that Prime Minister Starmer will be joining us for part of our discussions - the UK is an important partner for the EU.
Our view remains that increased protectionism is not in the interests of businesses or the global economic environment, and would not benefit the EU, Ireland or the US.
Ireland is at the centre of the European Union and any imposition of tariffs on the EU would create significant challenges.
Europe must and will work collectively and with the United States to avoid such a situation emerging, and if necessary to mitigate any measures taken.
