Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard announced Sweden's intention to propose EU sanctions against specific Israeli ministers due to concerns over their treatment of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Stenergard highlighted the absence of improvements for civilians and emphasized the need for stronger actions, specifically targeting those opposing a two-state solution. Despite advocating for sanctions, she affirmed Sweden's friendship with Israel. The commentary follows Israel's military escalation in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis affecting the region, with Sweden calling for increased access to aid for civilians.
Since we do not see a clear improvement for the civilians in Gaza, we need to raise the tone further. We will therefore now also push for EU sanctions against individual Israeli ministers.
The sanctions should target ministers who are pushing an illegal settlement policy and actively opposing a future two-state solution.
In all of our contacts with the Israeli government, we have long demanded increased humanitarian access and have been very critical of the fact that they have not secured it.
Sweden is concerned with how the Israeli government continues to escalate the situation, both in terms of statements and actions.
