It would be 'odd' for Ireland to recommend two names for the position despite a request for 'woman and a man' by Ursula von der Leyen, according to Taoiseach Simon Harris.
Ireland put forward former Finance Minister Michael McGrath for the role, one of the first countries to do so, seeing him step down from Cabinet.
