"That the outgoing coalition, led by the centre-left prime minister, Robert Golob, will have served a full term is, by Slovenian standards, almost miraculous. It was formed ahead of the 2022 election by Golob's Freedom Movement (Gibanje Svoboda, GS), a party established only months earlier by the former executive at the state-controlled energy company."
"Golob's government has been imperfect. The Freedom Movement's meteoric rise meant it took power with limited experience of government; improvisation has at times been too visible. Yet it can claim tangible achievements. After the devastating floods of 2023, it secured advance financial assistance for municipalities and citizens even before the final damage assessment was completed."
"Much of this progressive policy innovation has come from the most junior coalition partner, Levica, which controls only three of 20 ministries. Many of its measures target socially vulnerable groups that do not necessarily constitute its electoral base."
Slovenia will hold parliamentary elections on 22 March, with Prime Minister Robert Golob's coalition government completing a full term—a rare occurrence in Slovenian politics. Golob's Freedom Movement, established only months before the 2022 election, won 41 of 90 seats, enabling coalition formation with the Social Democrats and left party Levica for a 53-seat majority. Despite initial inexperience, the government achieved significant results: securing financial assistance after devastating 2023 floods, mitigating energy crisis impacts, increasing minimum wages, strengthening labour protections for cultural workers, and implementing a long-term care system. The junior coalition partner Levica, controlling three of twenty ministries, drove much progressive policy innovation targeting socially vulnerable populations.
