Taoiseach Micheál Martin plans to address ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza during an upcoming meeting with President Donald Trump, emphasizing the importance of a durable peace settlement. He noted the historical ties between Ireland and the U.S., particularly on St. Patrick's Day, highlighting the economic relationship and support for the Irish diaspora. Meanwhile, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald criticized increased military spending and asserted that true peace cannot arise from investing in war, stressing an urgent need for a shift in policy regarding both Ukraine and Gaza.
"We want a peace settlement that is lasting and durable in Ukraine. President Trump wants a peace settlement. There are different perspectives on that," Mr Martin said.
"Peace cannot be achieved 'by investing in war'." Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald emphasized, linking military spending to the challenges in achieving peace.
"We're going, fundamentally, to celebrate the historic links between Ireland and the US. St Patrick's Day has always been the traditional time to do that," Mr Martin noted.
"The US is categorically wrong on Gaza," Ms McDonald said, urging a reevaluation of military support toward diplomatic approaches.
