Sweden's citizenship backlog has cases waiting for decisions for up to ten years. The average processing time for citizenship by naturalisation has increased to 1,021 days. Older applications, some dating back to 2016, are prioritized by the Migration Agency. Despite delays, all cases from 2021 to 2026 have been assigned a case officer. Asa Holmes, head of the citizenship unit in Gothenburg, stated that there are reasons for the delays, and they monitor these older cases closely.
