'He has some cheek' - further tensions between Government TDs over school secretary strikes hit the airwaves
"The person who has a decision on this is obviously the Minister of Education and the Minister of Public Service Reform - so that's his own Minister, Jack Chambers. So, I think he would be far better off going up to Dublin and picketing outside Mr Chambers' office rather than mine."
"The public knows what's going on here. This is someone playing politics with a very, very serious issue. We have 2,600 people out on strike. These people deserve more than they're getting."
"I think if Brian had, rather than going on the media, picked up the phone to contact me about this - or indeed, I didn't post anything on social media, it was members of Fórsa the trade union that did - he'd understand what happened."
Brian Brennan expressed total sympathy for striking secretaries and caretakers and plans to join them on the picket line. Brennan criticized Malcolm Byrne for attending a protest outside his constituency office and said both are Government TDs, calling it counterproductive to use the issue as a "political football." Brennan pointed to the Minister of Education and Minister of Public Service Reform, Jack Chambers, as the decision-maker and suggested Byrne should picket Chambers' office instead. Brennan noted 2,600 people are on strike and voiced concern for their treatment. Malcolm Byrne denied playing politics, said unions invited representatives to attend protests, and emphasized securing a resolution for the strikers.
