Georgian president calls government illegitimate, claiming rigged election
Briefly

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has stated, 'There is no legitimate parliament and, therefore, an illegitimate parliament cannot elect a new president. My mandate continues until a legitimately elected parliament is formed.' This underscores her refusal to accept the current political landscape and the legitimacy of the recent elections.
In a striking address, Zourabichvili insisted that the parliament had no right to choose her successor, asserting, 'I will stay in post' as she challenges the authority of the ruling Georgian Dream party.
Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze accused the opposition of seeking to destabilize the government, claiming, 'Some people want a repeat of that scenario in Georgia,' referencing the Ukrainian protests, yet asserting, 'There will be no Maidan in Georgia.'
The ongoing protests reflect widespread discontent, as Zourabichvili noted, 'EU membership is overwhelmingly popular in Georgia,' emphasizing that the abrupt halt to accession talks contradicts a national goal enshrined in the constitution.
