The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has become the strongest political force in Thuringia, capturing over 33% of the votes in the state election, marking a significant shift in German politics.
Tino Chrupalla, AfD co-chairman, emphasized the party's intention to govern by stating, "One thing is very clear: The will of the voters is that there should be a change in policy," reflecting a strong mandate from voters.
Despite their electoral success, the AfD is likely to remain in opposition since other parties have ruled out any cooperation, which makes coalition-building challenging in both Thuringia and Saxony.
Bjorn Hocke, the Thuringian AfD state leader, proclaimed, "We are the number one party in Thuringia," indicating the party's ambition to analyze results and seek potential coalition partners, even as hurdles loom.
