The Eurovision Song Contest final in Vienna began amid a boycott by Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Iceland, and Slovenia over Israel’s participation. The boycott followed the dispute over Israel’s Gaza campaign, which began after the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023 that killed about 1,200 people in Israel. The Gaza war has resulted in more than 70,000 Palestinian deaths in the Gaza Strip. The boycott left the contest with 35 entries, the fewest since 2003, and the final featuring 25 acts. Television viewing figures are expected to be lower than last year’s 166 million viewers. Israel condemned the boycott as part of a global smear campaign. Finland’s duo and Australia’s Delta Goodrem were among the favorites to win.
