The funeral of Dr. Jim Donovan, a distinguished state forensic scientist, took place at St Paul's Retreat in Dublin. Eulogies by his sister Carmel and journalist Paul Williams highlighted his bravery and dedication. Carmel reminisced about his challenges in establishing the forensic lab and the impact of the violent assassination attempt in 1982. Williams praised Donovan's determination to continue serving despite constant pain, marking him as an unsung hero in Ireland's fight against crime and terrorism during turbulent times.
Carmel spoke of how she and her sister Helen looked to him as one of the most important people in the world, and we still do.
He was determined that the criminals and terrorists wouldn't deter him, or the state.
By 1975, Ireland had become engulfed in violence and mayhem, that was the year that Jim Donovan joined the Forensic Science Laboratory and became a pivotal figure in the state's fight back.
He climbed it and stayed at the top for 27 years, a typical Cork man.
