Albania will block access to TikTok for one year starting March 12, 2025, following a violent incident involving teens that resulted in a fatality. This decision, announced by Prime Minister Edi Rama, has sparked debate on social media's impact on youth. With around 1.5 million users in Albania, the government aims to curb violence linked to the app. Opposition parties have criticized the ban due to its implications on political campaigning ahead of upcoming elections. Albania is the first European country to enact such a ban, but others, including Romania, are considering similar actions.
The Albanian Authority for Electronic and Postal Communications has ordered all internet service providers to block access to the app's servers and provide written proof.
The ban was first announced in December by Prime Minister Edi Rama, who labeled the app a 'neighborhood thug' after a stabbing incident involving teenagers.
