With dissent struck down, Putin feels increasingly strong

In a report for the Carnegie Institute, analyst Alexander Baunov notes that the Kremlin is fighting two wars: the internal one and the external one. And Putin believes he's winning both: the one in Ukraine and the one he's carrying out against Russian citizens who are even the least bit critical of him.
He has eliminated all opposition - the leaders are dead, imprisoned, or in exile - and he has broken the foundation of civil society networks.
