What Caused the European Power Outage?
Briefly

On a recent Monday, millions in Spain and Portugal experienced a power outage, now almost fully restored. Preliminary investigations by Red Eléctrica, the operator of Spain's transmission network, have excluded cyberattack and human error as causes. Experts suggest that the outage might be linked to the unpredictable nature of renewable energy generation. In total blackouts, automatic disconnections occur to maintain grid stability, indicating a security feature of the electricity system itself. A drastic loss in generation capacity created an imbalance in supply and demand, triggering protective measures across the network.
"This generalized blackout occurred because, in just five seconds, more than half of the electricity-generation capacity was lost," said Álvaro de la Puente Gil, professor of electrical engineering.
Specialists emphasize that this type of total blackout-an exceptional and infrequent event-is also a security mechanism of the electricity system itself.
