On March 29, 2025, mass protests erupted in Istanbul organized by Turkey's main opposition CHP party in response to the arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul on corruption charges. Imamoglu, seen as a prominent challenger to President Erdogan, was detained on March 19, leading to one of the largest demonstrations against Erdogan's administration to date. Protesters gathered en masse, chanting slogans reminiscent of the 2013 Taksim Square protests, calling for justice and political rights amidst claims that Imamoglu’s arrest was politically motivated.
"If justice is silent, the people will speak," read one banner at the protests, highlighting a sentiment of urgent resistance against perceived injustices in the political system.
"The trend of the economy, the trend of justice, law everything is getting worse. That is why we are here. We say 'rights, law and justice' and we are seeking our rights," said a CHP supporter.
