Tunisia: Young people's anger mounts ahead of election DW 09/21/2024
Briefly

"We all came to demand an electoral feast of democracy like we had in 2019," Abidi told DW, emphasizing young people's desire for change, growth, and democratic processes as they express frustration with their leadership.
"Most of the young people who voted for Kais Saied in 2019 are extremely disappointed by now," Abidi stated, highlighting the betrayal felt by voters who believed in Saied's promise of youth empowerment and reform.
"Since July 2021, Saied has dismantled most of the country's democratic bodies, and has jailed journalists, lawyers and political opponents," shedding light on the ongoing repression that threatens Tunisia's political landscape as the presidential election approaches.
Human rights organizations have condemned the ongoing crackdown which is seen as his instrument to secure a second term in the upcoming elections, framing it as a violation of democratic norms the youth fought for.
