The war in Kosovo ended 25 years ago on June 10, 1999, with Resolution 1244 formally concluding hostilities, which had ceased the day before. The NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, involving German military for the first time without a UN mandate, marked a significant precedent in international interventions.
The breakup of Yugoslavia from 1991 onwards led to conflicts in several regions. In 1989, Serbian leader Milosevic revoked Kosovo's autonomy, intensifying the exclusion of ethnic Albanians. This sparked non-violent resistance and, later, armed opposition by the Kosovo Liberation Army.
