Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani emphasized during his visit to Doha the urgent need for economic assistance, stating, "We conveyed to Doha our concerns about the challenges related to the economic sanctions imposed on the Syrian people and we renew our call on the United States to lift those sanctions." This appeal reflects the dire state Syrians face, with around 90% living in poverty. Al-Shibani's discussions aim at fostering regional support to alleviate these hardships.
Following a series of diplomatic engagements, including talks with the German and French Foreign Ministers, Al-Shibani detailed his commitment to improving ties with the Arab world, articulating, "We are looking towards establishing strategic partnerships, not only to support security but also to propel Syria's economic recovery, which has been severely hampered by a relentless civil conflict and economic sanctions introduced against us."
Al-Shibani's visit to Qatar is not just a one-off meeting but part of a broader initiative, as he noted, "I am also set to visit Jordan and the United Arab Emirates for similar discussions. The aim is clear: to build alliances that can help us navigate through the challenges left in the wake of HTS's rise and the international isolation that followed Assad's regime's crackdown on dissent."
