Protesters in Belgrade and other Serbian cities initiated street blockades in response to recent arrests of demonstrators following a monumental rally demanding early elections and President Aleksandar Vucic's resignation. The protests have been ongoing since a tragic rail station roof collapse in 2024, highlighting issues of government corruption. Vucic, distancing himself from the protests, attributed the unrest to foreign influences and rebuffed calls for elections until 2027, insisting that Serbia cannot be defeated by violence as he addressed the nation.
Among those arrested were many students and activists who clashed with police during a massive rally that drew around 140,000 people in downtown Belgrade.
The protests were ignited by a deadly rail station roof collapse in November 2024, which brought to light deep-seated government corruption and negligence.
Vucic maintains that the protests are being fueled by foreign powers and that his administration is not yielding to demands for early elections.
In a televised address, Vucic claimed, 'Serbia has won, and you cannot defeat Serbia by violence as some wanted,' solidifying his stance against the protesters.
