Eugene Spector, a US citizen born in Russia, has been sentenced to 15 years in a maximum security Russian penal colony after being accused of leaking biotechnology secrets.
The FSB stated Spector acted on behalf of the Pentagon, collecting state secrets regarding biotechnology for a high-speed genetic screening system intended for the Russian population.
The US Department of State is monitoring the situation involving Spector, as the sentencing highlights ongoing tensions between Washington and Moscow over the treatment of US citizens in Russia.
Spector was already serving a previous three-and-a-half-year prison term for bribery when his new 15-year sentence was handed down, consolidating the two sentences.
