US President Joe Biden thanked US allies and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for their cooperation in the complex negotiations that led to the release of American prisoners Evan Gershkovich, Paul Whelan, and Vladimir Kara Murza as part of the groundbreaking US-Russia prisoner swap.
The deal facilitated the release of three US citizens, including green card holder Vladimir Kara-Murza, who were able to communicate with their families from the US Oval Office before being flown to Turkey and eventually returning home following their release from Russian detention.
Seven of the individuals released from Russian prisons were noted to be political prisoners within their own country, with four having ties to the deceased opposition leader Alexei Navalny and others associated with leading Russian rights group Memorial, providing them with the opportunity to reside safely abroad and continue their advocacy work.
