Russia deems Moscow Times 'undesirable,' putting writers, sources at risk
Briefly

A decision has been taken to declare the activities of The Moscow Times, a foreign nongovernmental organization, undesirable on the territory of the Russian Federation, Russia's prosecutor general's office said in a statement. It accused the outlet of discrediting the decisions of the leadership of the Russian Federation in both foreign and domestic policy.
Russian authorities have used the 'undesirable' label to force independent media and civic organizations critical of the Kremlin from the country, severely limiting their ability to report inside Russia and exposing them to legal risks.
The 'undesirable' classification forces organizations to cease operations in Russia and subjects Russians collaborating with them to potential prosecution, with jail terms of up to five years.
The Moscow Times, alma mater to many accomplished correspondents covering Russia, faces the ban. Notable figures connected to the publication include Evan Gershkovich and Ellen Barry.
