Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is taking legal action against the Trump administration after an order was signed to cancel its funding. RFE/RL’s president, Stephen Capus, argues this action is unlawful as the funds were officially appropriated by Congress. The broadcaster, which plays a crucial role in providing information in regions lacking free press, has a history dating back to the Cold War. The order also intends to dismantle the US Agency for Global Media, which oversees RFE/RL, intensifying concerns about content freedom and funding for independent journalism, particularly under the influence of government spending cuts advocated by figures such as Elon Musk.
"It is an unlawful act to withhold the funds that have been appropriated by Congress," Capus told DW from Washington, D.C., where he was holding meetings with congressional staffers to make his case.
"It's time to release the funds. It's time to respect this work that's being done, and it's of vital nature both for the United States and for members of our audience," Capus said.
