Poland, Hungary: How two close allies came to be estranged DW 02/06/2025
Briefly

On November 8, 2018, at a European People's Party meeting in Helsinki, Donald Tusk publicly rebuked Viktor Orban's political stance, marking a significant split in Eastern European politics. Tusk declared that true Christian democrats uphold the rule of law and reject xenophobia, directly countering Orban's definition of Hungary as a Christian democracy. This shift symbolized a turn from previously cordial relations between the two leaders, indicating a growing ideological rift that contrasts their respective governments' approaches to democracy and rule of law.
A true Christian democrat does not oppose the rule of law, an independent judiciary, the free press, and NGOs and does not tolerate xenophobia and nationalism.
For me, the moment when the paths of Viktor Orban and Donald Tusk diverged was November 8, 2018.
The event in Helsinki marked a definite change in the tone of relations between Donald Tusk and Viktor Orban.
