The European Environment Agency's report reveals that over 112 million people in Europe suffer from harmful noise pollution primarily from road traffic, with implications for public health, particularly among children. The noise levels exceed the thresholds set by the European Noise Directive, affecting respiratory health, mental well-being, and educational performance. More than 30% of Europeans experience noise above the World Health Organization's safe levels. The report stresses the urgency for EU Member States to address this issue in pursuing the 2030 zero pollution target, highlighting inadequate access to quiet, green spaces in urban areas.
More than one in five Europeans are exposed to unhealthily high levels of noise pollution from road, rail and aircraft, according to a report today from the European Environment Agency.
Long-term exposure to the sound of traffic has been connected to a range of health issues, including cardiovascular disease, mental illness, diabetes and premature death.
The report identified road traffic as the main problem particularly in crowded urban areas impacting an estimated 92 million people across the continent.
Noise pollution is often overlooked, considered just an annoyance of everyday life... it's a problem all EU Member States need to urgently address.
