The attack on the Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion, which was carrying 150,000 tonnes of crude oil, poses a significant environmental risk according to the EU’s Aspides mission.
Aspides emphasized that the MV Sounion now represents a navigational and environmental hazard, urging caution and awareness from those in the vicinity to prevent worsening the situation.
The British military reported that small boats attacked the Sounion about 140 kilometers west of the Yemeni port of Hodeida, leading to the crew's rescue.
With the evacuation of the crew complete, the Sounion's status remains uncertain, highlighting the immediate dangers it poses, still potentially ablaze.
