On the first anniversary of Alexei Navalny's death, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz commemorated the late dissident, emphasizing his bravery in standing against President Putin's oppressive regime. Navalny died in a Russian penal colony, with supporters alleging Kremlin involvement in his death. Commemorations are planned, both in Russia and abroad, with supporters urged to remember his legacy while being cautious of potential reprisals. Events include a memory-sharing session by Navalny's widow, Yulia, in Berlin, where many Russian dissidents now reside.
"Putin brutally combats freedom and its defenders," Scholz said. Navalny possessed courage which "made a difference and reaches far beyond his death," the German leader added.
Navalny died in a Russian Arctic penal colony on February 16 last year. His supporters believe his death came following direct orders from the Kremlin.
