Recent discussions by German politicians about Canada possibly joining the European Union have garnered interest on both sides of the Atlantic. Sigmar Gabriel proposed the idea, which Guy Verhofstadt echoed, suggesting no reason to exclude EU membership for Canada. Trade dynamics between Canada and the EU have evolved, particularly since the 2017 implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), resulting in a 65% increase in bilateral trade. This relationship highlights complementary sectors, such as resources and industrial equipment, hinting at a strategic partnership moving forward.
Canada has an abundance of natural resources that the EU doesn't have, but Europe creates and makes a lot of industrial equipment that helps extract those resources.
Since the signing of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement-CETA-between Canada and the EU, trade has increased by more than 65 percent, equalling $126.5 billion in 2023.
Another example is nuclear energy. Nuclear is going through a renaissance at the moment, and Canada can basically cover the full supply chain from mining uranium to building nuclear reactors.
The thought of this North Atlantic alliance excited some Canadians and Europeans—one YouTube video even theorized how "CANEU" (read: canoe) would be a "global superpower."
