Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has strongly opposed Ukraine's potential EU membership, arguing that it would negatively impact Hungary both economically and socially. He expressed concerns that membership would harm Hungarian farmers and lead to increased crime. Orban's stance is predicated on the belief that under current circumstances, Ukraine joining the EU is 'unthinkable.' Additionally, he linked Hungary's willingness to offer military aid and support for EU accession talks to specific demands, including gas transit agreements and lifting sanctions on certain Russian individuals.
Orban stated, 'It will destroy us. First of all, it will destroy Hungarian farmers and Hungarian agriculture; secondly, it will destroy the entire Hungarian national economy, and I have no idea how we will control the crime that will flood into Hungary with this.'
Orban emphasized that Ukraine's EU accession is 'unthinkable' under current conditions and insisted on preconditions for military aid and accession talks.
