Greece has reported an increase in migrant arrivals, with over 1,500 reaching Crete and around 230 rescued near the island of Gavdos. In total, more than 6,500 migrants arrived in Crete in the first half of 2025, surpassing the previous year’s total. Authorities are struggling to accommodate the large influx, as temporary reception facilities face capacity issues. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called for stronger action from Libya to control migration routes, and Greece is deploying naval resources to deter further crossings from Libya to Crete.
More than 1,500 people reached Crete in the past three days, with over 6,500 migrants arriving on the island in the first half of 2025 so far.
Authorities are struggling to house the increasing number of migrants, with 182 people directed to a temporary reception centre in Chania, where up to 600 are expected.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has urged Libyan authorities to take stronger action to prevent the migration flow to Crete and Gavdos.
Greece plans to deploy additional naval resources off Libyan waters to deter migrants from making the dangerous journey to its islands.
