Hopes of finding 48 missing people fade after boat sinks off Canary Islands
Briefly

At least nine people have been confirmed dead in a shipwreck off the Spanish coast, including a child, with 48 others missing and presumed dead.
The rescue efforts faced enormous challenges due to wind and poor visibility, complicating the attempts to save those on board the sinking vessel.
Canary Islands Minister of Social Welfare warned that if migration trends continue, this incident could represent the biggest humanitarian crisis in 30 years for the region.
Those on the boat originated from Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal, having departed from Nouadhibou in Mauritania, nearly 500 miles away from the Canary Islands.
