Germany recalls envoy to Russia over cyberattack DW 05/06/2024
Briefly

Germany has temporarily recalled its ambassador to Moscow following a state-sponsored Russian cyberattack targeting members of the ruling party. The ambassador, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, will return to Berlin for consultations and then head back to Moscow.
The cyberattack was attributed to APT28, a group linked to Moscow's GRU military intelligence agency. Known as Fancy Bear, they have conducted numerous cyberattacks worldwide, including targeting German defense and aerospace firms.
The APT28 attacks exploited a Microsoft Outlook software vulnerability to compromise email accounts. The cyber campaign affected not only Germany but also other countries like the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Sweden.
Russia has faced accusations of engaging in hacking and spying activities in Europe. The German government takes the cyberattack seriously, viewing it as an assault on liberal democracy.
