For the hundreds of political prisoners in Russia's brutal penitentiary system, word of the death of the country's most prominent jailed dissident, Alexei Navalny, took days to arrive - and carried a terrifying, if obvious, reminder: None of them are safe.
Since the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the Russian government has cracked down mercilessly on political opponents and critics of the war, prompting many to flee into exile and sweeping many into prison, often with exceedingly long sentences.
