EU must boost defence spending to counter Russia's threat, says Kallas
Briefly

Kaja Kallas, the top EU diplomat, emphasized the urgent need for increased defense spending among EU members to confront Russia's existential threat to European security. Addressing concerns about a potential Russian attack, she noted that European nations have long provided Russia with alternatives. Intelligence assessments indicate that Russia could test EU readiness within the next three to five years. Kallas also highlighted criticism from Donald Trump regarding inadequate EU defense contributions, echoing calls from European officials for a significant boost in military budgets to enhance deterrence against Russia's military ambitions.
Russia poses an existential threat to Europe's security today, tomorrow and for as long as we underinvest in our defence, she added. Kallas also acknowledged United States President Donald Trump was right in saying that EU members do not spend enough on defence.
Many of our national intelligence agencies are giving us the information that Russia could test EU's readiness to defend itself in three to five years, she said, addressing the annual conference of the European Defence Agency in Brussels on Wednesday.
