EU approves new migration pact DW 04/11/2024
Briefly

The new migration pact introduced by the EU intends to reduce the number of new arrivals, accelerate asylum processes, and create centers at the EU's external borders. This move comes as asylum applications have been steadily increasing, with about 1.14 million in 2023 and four million refugees from Ukraine housed in the EU since 2022.
Asylum procedures at the EU's external borders will involve the quick identification of asylum seekers and refugees within seven days of arrival. Their information will be stored in the Eurodac database with expanded biometric data. Migrants from countries with low recognition rates may face up to 12 weeks of detention at the border's holding centers.
The new pact includes the establishment of holding centers in select EU countries like Greece, Italy, Malta, Spain, Croatia, and Cyprus. These centers will determine if applicants can be sent back to their origin country without further investigation, potentially affecting a small number of arrivals.
